TUUPOVAARA, FINLAND – In the heart of North Karelia, where the earth holds secrets nearly three billion years old, a quiet revolution in well-being began four decades ago. This year, Hukka Design celebrates its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of transforming ancient Finnish soapstone into world-renowned icons of sauna culture.
A 2.8-Billion-Year-Old Treasure
The secret to Hukka’s expertise lies in its raw material. North Karelian soapstone is a unique natural treasure found exclusively in Finland. Formed over 2.8 billion years ago, this stone possesses extraordinary thermal properties:
- Thermal Mass: It retains both heat and cold for incredibly long periods.
- Sensory Appeal: Despite its density, it has a signature soft, silky texture.
- Purity: It is completely food-safe and naturally easy to maintain.
Löylynhenki: The Icon of the Finnish Sauna
No product embodies Hukka’s 40-year legacy better than Löylynhenki (The Spirit of the Sauna). Designed by Jukka Tommila and launched in 1985, this stone fountain quickly became an indispensable part of the Finnish sauna ritual. Löylynhenki does more than just sit on the stove; it brings the “spirit” of the sauna to life, providing a steady, humid heat that has earned it a permanent place in homes across the globe. To celebrate this milestone, Hukka Design has released a limited celebratory edition of the original Löylynhenki—each piece is numbered (1–40) and presented in exclusive commemorative packaging.

From a Log Workshop to Global Recognition
While Hukka Design moved to a modern production facility in the Tuupovaara industrial area in 1989, it has never lost its artisanal soul. What began with handmade items has evolved into a sophisticated production powerhouse.
Today, Hukka Design is a prestigious global brand, particularly beloved in Japan, with 70% of its production exported worldwide. In 2024, under the new leadership of Michel Mercier, the company is embarking on a new chapter with a renewed focus on international growth and sustainable innovation.
“Hukka Design is more than a manufacturer; we are the guardians of a 2.8-billion-year-old heritage. Our 40 years of expertise ensure that every stone we carve carries the true essence of the Finnish sauna.”
