Hair care in the sauna

Taking care of your hair and head in the sauna is important. When should I was my hair, before or after sauna? Should I wear a headpiece in the sauna and why? Does the heat damage my hair? These are some of the questions that we receive on a monthly basis. We interviewed an accomplished hairdresser on the topic and collected all the information in one article.

Protecting your head

Protecting your head in the sauna helps you enjoy the experience for longer. Wearing a hat or a towel on your head while being in the sauna will help your body to regulate its temperature better and prevents your body from overheating too fast. Your hair on the other hand doesn´t mind the short-term heat. “Our hair is being straightened, curled and dried with high temperatures as high as 250c. Sauna does not get that hot, so you don´t have to worry about the heat damaging your hair in any way.” – says Kati Mouhu, owner of the Studio SAVON, who has years long experience with the haircare world.

Take care of your hair in the sauna

Hair care is an essential part of the sauna experience. So, when should you wash your hair? In general, you should always wash your hair after sweating in the sauna. You can rinse your hair before sauna and cover your head for a longer lasting sauna experience. After the sauna, wash and condition your hair normally.

To make a pampering haircare moment, use a hair mask and cover your head with a towel in the sauna. The heat will intensify the effects of the hair mask.

Cold swimming

“If you plan on cold swimming in the lake, I suggest you keep your hair dry and protect your head with a hat or a towel.” says Kati. Not using a head piece and going to the cold water with wet hair might promote hypothermia.
