In the heart of the picturesque Blue Mountains in Australia, a unique endeavor was born out of a passion for sauna culture. The Blue Mountain Sauna, the brainchild of a dynamic duo, Inga and her partner Nikita, embarked on a mission to bring a genuine Finnish sauna experience to the Southern Hemisphere. What started as a desire for quality relaxation turned into a significant milestone with the recent reception of the Authentic Finnish Sauna Experience Quality Certificate.
The Genesis of Blue Mountain Sauna
The journey began with a frustration familiar to sauna enthusiasts in Australia—a lack of high-quality saunas that embraced the Finnish tradition of relaxation. Inga, with her unique background of being half Ukrainian and half German, envisioned creating an authentic sauna experience in the Australian landscape. Her upbringing in Siberia and Crimea, followed by years in Germany, fueled the desire to introduce Australians to the genuine essence of sauna culture.
Choosing the Blue Mountains
The decision to establish The Blue Mountain Sauna in the cold and scenic Blue Mountains was deliberate. The region’s snowy landscapes, surrounded by nature, and a vibrant lifestyle community, provided the ideal backdrop for their vision. The founders found the perfect building, or perhaps it found them, and within three months, The Blue Mountains Sauna opened its doors, quickly garnering a devoted following both online and in person.
Crafting the Authentic Experience
As the founders delved into creating an authentic Finnish sauna experience, they realized the importance of understanding the intricacies of sauna culture. While Inga’s European experience provided a solid foundation, they sought guidance on key elements such as sauna build heights, textiles, changing room design, and product choices. A pivotal moment came when they discovered a handbook from Sauna from Finland, offering checkboxes to compare their facility against the standards of an authentic Finnish experience.
We were maybe 85% of the way there and researching exactly the words authentic Finnish experience, we found the Quality handbook which was really helpful. The handbook gave us actual check boxes that we could go through and compare our work and our facilities our facility to our category which was Urban sauna and that was very very helpful.

The Certification Journey
Armed with newfound knowledge and a commitment to excellence, The Blue Mountain Sauna set out to obtain the Authentic Finnish Sauna Experience Quality Certificate. The accreditation process involved going through their facility against established criteria. Consulting with experts in Finland, including the architect of their building, the founders pieced together a network of influences that played a role in their sauna venture. Finally a member of Sauna from Finland audited their sauna facility in person.
Expanding Horizons
With the certificate proudly in hand, The Blue Mountains Sauna looks to the future with ambitious expansion plans. The overwhelming demand for their authentic sauna experience has prompted the decision to triple the size of their Blue Mountains facility, introducing multiple saunas and enhancing the overall customer experience. Additionally, the founders have their sights set on opening a second facility in the state of Victoria, exploring the potential for growth and connection with natural elements.
We want to look at the next market for us and we’re not sure what that is yet, but we’ve definitely explored a few other cities, States and even internationally. New Zealand is something that we’ve thought long and hard about because they deserve sauna too same as Australia.
