To us, saunas have always been a hot topic but we are now witnessing an unseen sauna boom around the world. The Finnish sauna experience has received a lot of media attention since the beginning of the year 2023 and we decided to make a short recap of this major media visibility.
“There’s a movement now,” said Eero Kilpi, president of the North American Sauna Society, who pointed to commercial saunas popping up as well as sales of portable, mobile saunas, which people can put in their backyard or take on a camping trip.
Saunas, steam baths and sweat lodges are baked into cultural traditions for many people across the globe, from Native Americans to Koreans to Scandinavians.

You only have to look at Instagram or TikTok, where stars from Lady Gaga to Gwyneth Paltrow to the Beckhams post pictures from saunas to see the steam rising. On Instagram, a search for the hashtag #saunaselfie yields more than 33,500 results.

So, what kind of benefits can you expect from taking regular saunas? A culture prominent in Scandinavia, the Baltics, and central and eastern Europe, but one that is perhaps most closely associated with Finland, where studies have found regular sauna use may protect against dementia.
It raises the heart rate in a similar way to gentle exercise, helps heal achy or stiff joints and muscles, promotes better sleep and many swear by that post-sauna glow on their skin.
